New York City honours Gloria DeNard

A street naming ceremony is set to be held in New York City, Sunday 11 October 2026, to mark the official designation of Lexington Avenue between - 106th Street and 107th - as Gloria DeNard Way.

Timings of the opening ceremony are TBC - WTS.

The designation is a fitting tribute to a woman who did so much for local communities in East Harlem and for those far beyond her own neighbourhood. She was a singer and musician - aka The Bel Canto of East Harlem - and the founder of The Manna House Workshops - an accessible music and dance school in East Harlam focussed on jazz, that saved and enriched lives, produced many great performers and showed profound leadership and vision at a time of immense challenge for her and her community.
